Purpose of the Conference

The Transatlantic Airways Conference is held on an annual basis to review recent advances in the study of airway biology. Each conference is expected to meet three principal objectives:

First, it is given the task of summarizing current knowledge and suggesting new investigative approaches to increase our understanding of fundamental mechanisms in airway biology. Second, the conference should assemble a large interdisciplinary group of scientists from within and outside the pulmonary research community. Finally, the conference should serve as a forum for exchange of ideas among investigators representing different countries. Free discussion forms the basis of the conference, with short presentations and extensive debate.

The eighteenth conference examined airway membrane transport and intracellular trafficking. The conference comprised three logical and cohesive sections on ion channels in apical membranes of airway epithelia, coupling of ion channel functions in relationship to volume flow and integrated airway surface physiology, pathophysiology and therapy. Dr. Richard Boucher, the Chairman of the conference, invited an outstanding faculty of speakers and discussants. He was an excellent chairman, who was not only exceptionally knowledgeable, but also able to stimulate productive discussions. The articles published in this first issue of the Proceedings of the American Thoracic Society continue the high standard of publications that has resulted from previous conferences. We hope that they will act as a stimulus for future research into airway biology.
