A long-standing tradition of the International Meeting of the American Thoracic Society has been the Clinical Year in Review. Here outstanding scholars in specialized areas of our field review what they regard to be the best five papers of the year in their field that have appeared in the peer-reviewed journals over the past year. I have received and continue to receive outstanding suggestions from our members about how we can best serve the society. Terence Trow, who co-chaired the Clinical Year in Review during the 2005 meeting, has suggested that an executive summary of each of the sessions be included in four different editions of PATS. In all, five papers will be summarized by each Session Chair on 16 different topics. Included here are the first four executive summaries. The next three editions of PATS will contain the additional summariesa process to be renewed each year if the Chair and Session Co-Chairs are willing to undertake the effort. As editor, I applaud their willingness to insure that the educational activities of our Society continue to lead the world.
