The Transatlantic Airway Conference is held annually for an in-depth discussion of a well focused aspect of airway biology. A small group of scientists from within and outside the pulmonary research community is asked to exchange research findings with the intent to advance our understanding of cellular and molecular processes underlying airway disease. While the conference is intentionally kept small, the proceedings are shared widely as reflected in this supplement.
The twentieth conference examined the role of viral infection in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by reviewing some of the mechanisms involved in the airways' response to respiratory viruses. The focus was on the host response to viruses rather than the biology of viruses. Michael Holtzman, the chairman of the conference, not only assembled an impressive cadre of leading scientists in this field of investigation, but also exhibited great skill in leading productive discussions. The papers published in this supplement served as catalysts for free discussion and exchange of ideas which we trust will benefit future research in airway biology.
