The 49th Annual Thomas L. Petty Aspen Lung Conference was held June 7 through 10, 2006. The title of the conference was "Immunologic Diseases of the Lung." Due to the breadth of the field of immunology, the organizers chose to limit the scope of the meeting to rheumatologic lung disease and other T-cell–mediated disorders of the lung, such as sarcoidosis. It was decided that the 49th conference would bring together investigators from all areas of pulmonary medicine to discuss the recent advances in the field of lung immunology. The meeting was planned with an emphasis on the basic and translational sciences, including the potential use of biologic agents in the treatment of these disorders. There was some trepidation by the organizers in planning a meeting based on general scientific principles rather than on a specific disease entity. However, the exchange of ideas and the presentation of new information occurred at an exceedingly high level.

We thank all of the speakers and conference participants, without whom this meeting would not have been possible. In addition, we thank the Francis Family Foundation for their continued support of the Parker B. Francis Lectureship. We also greatly appreciate the generous support of all of the sponsors of this year's conference. Finally, we thank Jeanne Cleary, who was solely responsible for the arrangement of the state-of-the-art speakers and social events. We hope that you enjoy reading the proceedings of the conference.
