Purpose of the Conference

The aim of the annual Transatlantic Airway Conference is to review recent advances in research directed at various aspects of airway biology. The twenty-third conference in this series, entitled Stem/Progenitor Cells and Lung Repair, assembled scientists from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss the state of the art in the use of stem cells and progenitor cells to understand lung development, and to repair lung structure and restore lung function in a variety of respiratory diseases and disease models. Although the field is still in its infancy, the presentations and discussions highlighted potential applications of cell therapy, some of which may become clinically useful in the future.

Under the skillful guidance of Anne Bishop, who chaired the meeting, the participants not only benefited from new data but, by virtue of the conference's emphasis on discussion, also identified future approaches that can advance the field. The scientific papers included in this symposium formed the basis of those productive discussions.

We would like to thank the following participants: M. Alison, J. A. Barbera, A. E. Bishop, C. Coraux, A. Dutly, J. F. Engelhardt, G. P. Fadini, R. Farre, A. Fine, A. Giangreco, U. Griesenbach, S. M.
