Lung cancer has been and remains the number one cancer killer in North America and the western world. There have been dramatic changes in diagnosis, staging, and treatment options in the past 5 to 10 years, as well as a spectacular expansion in our understanding of the molecular biology of this disease. The purpose of this virtual symposium was to help keep pulmonary medicine specialists and scientists abreast of these rapid changes. Much of this new information is published in journals that are not typically read by the pulmonary community. Our goal was to bring this new knowledge together in one symposium. Included are state of the art articles on bronchoscopic ultrasound (EBUS) and positron emission tomography (PET). Genomic changes related to lung cancer are reviewed along with a comprehensive assessment of nucleotide excision repair genes and their potential importance in selecting the most effective chemotherapeutic agents for treatment. The current status of chemoprevention, role of adjuvant chemotherapy, and treatment of advanced non–small cell lung cancer are summarized. The reader will also find a review of the status of anti-angiogenic agents and vaccines for treatment.
Our hope is that this symposium will serve as a quick reference regarding the rapid changes that are occurring in this disease and will help expand the reader's understanding of the current state of the art. Given that "knowledge is power," it is anticipated that this information will allow you to deliver the highest level of care available to your patients with this devastating disease.
